If you come to San Diego, you know you are going to eat well. From living in San Diego for four years now, I have had the chance to try out a lot of different San Diego restaurants. While I could not include every restaurant that I love, I made a list of my favorite restaurants for each type of food and why I love them.
Best Italian: Bencotto – Little Italy
Little Italy is full of great Italian places, but my favorite has to be Bencotto. Being famous for their pasta, they hand make their own noodles daily. When you walk inside the layout is stunning from the bar to the top floor overlooking the bottom. You can ‘create your own’ pasta and choose between selections of their homemade sauce and noodles. I highly suggest adding the meatballs to any pasta dish. They are hands down the best meatballs I have ever tasted.
Best French: Fabrison’s French Creperie Cafe – Little Italy
Fabrison’s French Creperie is definitely a little hole-in-the-wall place with authentic French food. The owner of the restaurant is from France and he loves coming out to speak to the customers. They have a pretty good selection of sweet and savory crepes, hence the name.
Best Sushi: Umi Sushi – Point Loma
Umi Sushi takes the win for best sushi for one reason: the charger roll. I especially recommend this roll to people who are just starting to try out sushi because it has soy paper instead of seaweed. I find that the soy paper takes a way a big part of the fishy taste. It is a little pricey compared to other nearby sushi places, but it is worth it! Every roll I have had has been amazing and they have a huge selection to choose from.
Best Asian Fusion: OB Noodle – Ocean Beach
On any night of the week, OB noodle house is the place to go. It has even been on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives because of its famous Spicy Garlic Wings. OB noodle is also really well known for their pho and sake (I love the melon!). My favorite dish is the char-grilled shrimp bun vermicelli noodles. They also have a huge selection of beers on tap.
Best Burgers: Hodad’s – Ocean Beach
You will never find Hodad’s without a line out the door. They are a classic burger joint known for stuffing their burgers to the brink of explosion.
Best Pizza: URBN Coal Fired Pizza – North Park
Located in the heart of North Park, this place has a great atmosphere and awesome food. You can build your own pizza or choose from a selection of chef crafted favorites. They also have a lot of great deals from time to time. If you go during the week and purchase a bottle of wine or a pitcher of beer, you get a free pizza! Great place to go for big groups or date night.
Best Sandwich: Rubicon Deli – Mission Beach
Ask anyone in San Diego where their favorite place to get a sandwich is, and they will say Rubicon Deli. Located right in the heart of Mission Beach, its a great place to go on a beach day. They have their famous classic sandwiches but everything is customizable. I love the Rubicon Special toasted on whole wheat bread.
Best Overall: D Bar – Hillcrest
D Bar pretty much takes the win in all categories. Great dining, drinks, and desserts, hence the ‘D’ in D Bar. The atmosphere is cool and sleek to complement the presentation of their dishes and desserts. Almost everyone can find something that they like at D Bar from chicken and waffle sandwiches, salmon salads to pizza sandwiches. The one thing you absolutely must order is the crue fries. Basically a loaded baked potato with fries; they are to die for. I would definitely go just for the crue fries and desserts.
Best Drinks: Polite Provisions/Soda & Swine – North Park
Walking into Polite Provisions is like taking a step back in time into an underground speakeasy. Even the store front says “Prescription Drugs” to keep with the speakeasy theme. The craft cocktails are amazing and the menu is always changing. If you go with a group make sure to get the punch bowl; there is more than enough alcohol in that to go around. However, I am such a sucker for mules so I would have to say the Kentucky Buck is my favorite drink. What is unique about Polite Provisions is that they have paired with Soda & Swine right next door to serve food. You can place an order and have it delivered to you at Polite Provisions.
